Who Family Visas Are For

The “family” category is broad. It can cover partners, children and parents in different situations — but it does not cover siblings, cousins or more distant relatives.

Partners (life partners and spouses)

Partner of a New Zealander (temporary and resident visas); Partner of a Worker (temporary visa); Partner of a Student (temporary visa). These visas are for people in a genuine and stable relationship with a New Zealand citizen, resident or eligible visa holder.

Dependent children (including adopted children)

Dependent child of a New Zealander; Dependent child of a Worker. These visas are for children who rely on their parent for financial and day‑to‑day support, including adopted children in some cases.

Parents and grandparents (visitor and residence options)

Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visas; Guardian Visitor Visa; Parent Retirement Residence; Parent Residence; Parent Boost Visitor Visa. These options are for parents (and in some cases grandparents) of New Zealanders or eligible residents. Each has its own rules, time limits and financial requirements.

Who is not covered

Family visas generally do not cover siblings, cousins or other extended relatives. In those cases, we look at other visa categories instead.
