Plan your study pathway in Aotearoa New Zealand with clear, practical visa advice.
Study in New Zealand
New Zealand offers a range of student visas for school, vocational and higher education. At UniPass, we help you understand which study options fit your goals, what each visa allows you to do, and how study can support your longer‑term plans to live and work in New Zealand.
Who Student Visas Are For
Student visas can support different types of study and different stages of life.
Tertiary studies
For people studying certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate qualifications or PhDs at approved New Zealand institutions. We check that your chosen course and provider are eligible for a student visa and fit your long‑term goals.
Pathway study
For students planning up to three consecutive programmes under a single Pathway Student Visa. We look at how each step in your study plan connects, and how it may support future work or residence options.
School‑age students and guardians
For children attending primary or secondary school, and for guardians who may need a visa to accompany them. We help you understand enrolment, guardianship and financial requirements.
English language studies
For students who want to improve their English for study, work or migration. We check that your English course and provider are eligible, and how English study fits into your wider immigration plans.
Work Rights for Students in New Zealand
Student visas can include work rights, but the rules depend on your course, your level of study and your visa conditions.
Part‑time work while studying
Many full‑time students can work up to 25 hours per week during term time if their course and provider meet certain requirements. We check whether your planned study is likely to include part‑time work rights and what that means in practice.
Full‑time work in holidays and for some postgraduate study
Some student visas allow full‑time work during scheduled breaks. Students studying a PhD or a Master’s by thesis may also be allowed to work full‑time throughout the duration of their visa. We help you understand when you can work more hours and how this fits with your study and visa conditions.
Work rights for partners
In some cases, the partner of a student may be able to get a work visa based on the student’s course and level of study. We look at whether your study plans could support work rights for your partner as well.
After‑study options (post‑study work)
Certain higher‑level qualifications may lead to a post‑study work visa, allowing you to work in New Zealand after you finish studying. We explain when this may be possible and how your choice of course can affect future work and residence options.
Talk to Us About Your Study Plans
The right study visa depends on your course, your background and what you hope to do after you finish studying. In a consultation, we’ll review your goals, check which student visa options may fit you, and outline the steps to prepare a strong application.
We also work closely with many schools and education providers across New Zealand. Whether you already have an offer of place or you’re still exploring your study options, you’re welcome to talk to us about what might suit you best.
